Graph of Functions(Modulus Function)

published on March 29th, 2008 . by Vanaja

The function y= f(x) is defined by

f(x)=\left|x \right|=\begin{cases}x, when,x\geq 0\\-x, when, x<0\end{cases}
is called a modulus function. It also known as absolute value function.

We can see that the domain of the modulus function is the set R of real numbers. and the range is the set of all non-negative real numbers.

That is {R}^{+}=\lbrace x \varepsilon R:x\geq 0 \rbrace

The graph of this function consists of

  1. line y= -x, when x<0
  2. point (0,0)
  3. line y=x, when x >0

It is clear from the graph that f:R\rightarrow R \,given\, by \,f(x)=\left|x \right| is a many-one into function.
